About

Diana Albarrán González
PhD Candidate, Te Ara Poutama, AUT

As a result of my research in collaboration with Malacate Taller Experimental Textil and other relevant actors in the region, we want to celebrate and showcase the cultural richness from the Highland of Chiapas in a series of events, exhibitions and workshops in Aotearoa.
Aligned with the International Year of Indigenous Languages, this is a great opportunity to echo and connect Indigenous peoples and our different languages (spoken and woven) from Latin American countries with Tangata Whenua, an exchange of experiences and knowledges.

Mayan Women's Textile Collective

Funded in 2010, Malacate is formed by Mayan Tsotsil, Tseltal and Tojolabal textile artisans and a mestiza ethnologist working as an independent collective that creates, rescues and promotes techniques and designs based in their Mayan Cosmology.

They are known for their active work towards ethical practices in the artisanal design sector and the recognition of textiles as part of their Indigenous rights.
